Thanks for your input Colby, that was one topic I've been musing on recently after reflecting on a years worth of Cisco CCNA certified college courses. It Slipped through the cracks. Namely, re-numbering the management vlan.

I know that the vlan database is an old way of creating vlans, but on older equipment with older ios it is the only way and still worth mentioning as there are useful functions there still. They still teach that in the CCNA courses and it is on the 640-802 test.

Cheers

No it doesn't. The "interface vlan" command is for modifying SVIs. On an L2 switch only one SVI is active and it's simply for management. And if this were an L3 switch, we wouldn't need the router on a stick...

The "vlan database" command is quite old and should be used anymore. My tutorial is correct.

Very nice tutorial, however the switch config needs int before the vlan to be correct, i.e.
Switch(config)#interface vlan 5
Switch(config-if)#

Some equipment requires vlans to be created in the vlan database: ...
Switch(config)#vlan database
Switch(vlan)#vlan 5
Switch(vlan)#apply

At least for Cisco equipment.

Cheers
