Got A New Toy

We had two 7204VXRs at work that have been sitting on a shelf for a couple years. I figured I could actually put one of them to use, so I cleared it with the guys and brought it home.

So far I’m loving this thing. I have it at my edge, it’s running CME and some GRE/IPSEC tunnels (PeerIX stuff), along with heavy QoS. Not surprisingly, it handles all this with ease.

If anyone knows of a good deal on an NPE-400 please let me know.

Studying For The CCDA

I’ve decided to get the CCDP seeing as it’s only two more exams for me (DESGN and ARCH). I’ve already finished BSCI and BCMSN for the CCNP. I’ve always had interest in design and I figure this couldn’t hurt on my resume. I’ll do my best to write some design-related articles as I get ideas.

I’m hoping to get the CCDA completed in the next few weeks. I’d like to get the CCDP done by February, but that might be a tad ambitious with my current workload.

New Dynamips Server

Dell was running a deal on the PowerEdge T110 a couple weeks ago, so I decided to grab one as an upgrade to the T100 I was currently using for Dynamips on ESX.

Server specs:
X3430 Xeon Processor, 2.4 GHz 8M Cache
4GB DDR3 1333 RAM
500GB HDD

The T110 doesn’t support ESX (yet?), so I just did a straight install of Ubuntu 9.10. This thing is a beast, I brought up the completed MPLS and BGP lab I posted awhile back. Running at full steam it’s only using ~25% of the CPU. I’m pretty excited. This should be able to handle anything I can throw at it. Now I just need to find some more CCIE labs…

Update: ESXi is now supported on the T110 as of the ESXi4 U1 release.

Looking For A Job

Just found out my company is planning to off-shore a ton of jobs this year. I’ve been told I shouldn’t be worried, but I’m not one to wait around for the axe.

I’m currently in Orlando, FL, but I’m also looking at Tampa, Atlanta and Raleigh. I know not too many people read this blog yet, but to those of you who do, please contact me, or post a comment if you have any leads for a Network Engineer position.

I Passed QoS!

I decided to take 642-642 QoS on somewhat of a whim. I’ve been studying QoS a lot for the CCIE (and ONT when I was working on the CCNP) and because I think it’s very cool technology. I heard the exam wasn’t too bad so I decided to take it today, and I PASSED!

I’m considering going for the CCIP, I would still need to do the BGP and MPLS exams, or the composite. With the changes in the CCIE happening my study has been derailed a bit so the CCIP might be something to focus on. We’ll see. This did renew my CCNA, CCNA: Voice and CCNP though, so at the very least I accomplished that.

Not much more to say, just a little celebratory post.
